A Divisional Police Police Officer who beat up a female traffic warden has been demoted by the Inspector General of Police.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ikenne Division of the Ogun State Police Command, Patrick Onwu, who beat up a female traffic warden, has been demoted from the rank of Superintendent of Police to that of a Deputy Superintendent by the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, after an investigative panel set up by the State Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, indicted him.
In
a swift reaction, the IGP directed Ali to forward the necessary details
of the accused officer to the force secretary, Abuja, for further
disciplinary actions.
Onwu had descended on the female traffic warden, Inspector Anifat Bello, at her duty post at the NNPC Junction on IBB Boulevard way, Abeokuta, the state capital, and beat her to a pulp for daring to stop his vehicle while controlling the traffic.
The incident had drawn a lot of condemnation by the force and the State Police Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Muyiwa Adejobi,
had said in a press statement that Ali was unhappy about the incident
and had directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated.
Arase
commended the high level of discipline displayed by Bello, who refused
to fight back, saying that the likes of Onwu, should not be in the
police.
